This gave me a lot to think about. I'm seeking to build a local audience, and it's been fairly successful. One thing I may be inspired to do because of this post is to finally schedule an event of my own similar to the experience you describe. I believe local-oriented media can push back a little on the atomization.

Another thing I think I might do is experiment with video here in Substack. Yours today is the first I've ever actually watched!

I'm still working on being successful with building a local audience 😜 But I really hope this catches on. If people geographically close to us discover us as writers and then share our work with others outside of our geographical area, we can still spread our work. But I think we really need to spend some time focusing on local in a lot of things.

And I'm really having fun experimenting with video. I'm a writer, but the video allows me to think through things and share in other ways (without relying on IG Reels).

Let me know how all of it goes!

I experimented with video early on in this phase of my career, but found the effort wasn't really worth it. I'm in production for today's newsletter, but am wondering if you can answer a question. Can you upload a video or does it have to be recorded into a phone? I prefer to not use my phone for video.

You have to use your phone for Live.

Otherwise, you can upload any video to any post directly from your computer. I've done both.
