Sarah, I'm biased but when it comes to branching out into fiction, I can't recommend short stories strongly enough. The basics of story structure of a long form piece is still there but it makes you write tighter, crisper, and with a little punch. Best, Jim
One of my friends challenged me to start with flash fiction because I'm so verbose 😂 It has been a good challenge and I'm discovering a character thread that I want to keep building off of. Who knows? Maybe it will become a book of vignettes 😉
Sky's the limit. Personally, I'm no good with flash. Sweet spot for me is around 5-7K but find what you're comfortable with and just let it go. There's so much freedom with fiction. Good luck to you. - Jim

Yeah, I've got a 6K story from grad school that I'm ready to tackle next. I think I've grown enough in ten years to make it better.
